I believe and have found peace in Jesus' proclamations that "a person who would truly be a leader must be servant of all" and "that apart from Him a person can do nothing." The work you do will not be eternally meaningful or worthwhile unless you lift it to Him in prayer, He directs the doing of it, and your heart is aimed at doing your best for His glory.
Ask the Lord each day what contribution He would have you make in this world that would please Him. He plans to use your words and your work to draw people to Himself so they will have peace and joy in their hearts and a home in Heaven when they exit this Earth. Then, they can truly be fulfilled and blessed by pursuing and doing what they are made for and use the influence gained and opportunities presented to lead others to Him.
You are likely going to be working for an employer or yourself for more than forty years and definitely want to find the most fruitful, peaceful, and joyful way to do so. You want the work to represent more than enduring drudgery to pay the bills. Also, the humble customer service and skill displayed doing the work should positively serve other people. Make sure you set aside time each day and week to rest your body and mind to rejuvenate your strength and mental capabilities. Every so often you should take at least a one to two-week vacation. This will allow you to continue to give the best of yourself to the people you serve in every arena in which you are engaged (Church, employer, self-employed, etc.). Otherwise, pressures and stresses will seriously mess you up emotional-ly, physically, and spiritually.
Open your mind to the fact that you will always likely engage more than one type of work or volunteer service. For example, I have worked for over 30 years and have also been volunteering in various ministries at the local Church we attend. In addition, I have been writing MoneyWalk articles and speaking at Churches and conferences to help other people become better managers of the money the LORD entrusts to them. From time to time, I find He moves me to work in other arenas for which He puts a passion in me for that time in my life. I engage them because I know they bring a smile to His face and will serve me well. You will find the same when you seek Him and serve others in the way He instructs, and you will find that He has been grooming you all along to be a con-summate leader that can be trusted.
Please pray for this ministry and email me with any questions. May the LORD bless you richly as you follow His plan!
