MoneyWalk 84 Appreciating Your Spouse

 

This program will help you undo financial bondage.

Many husbands and wives have failed to honor one another thus feelings of appreciation have evaporated. The most tragic consequence is family disunity. This often produces financial problems. When they fail to make commitment to Christ the foundation of marriage (including love, respect, and honor for each other) they cannot forge a unified path. Divorce inevitably ensues, hurting their children as well. They go through divorce proceedings and spend lots of money and obtain loans to pay court and attorney fees and settle property and custody issues. It costs even more when the divorce gets messy and is dragged out a long time.

Sometimes this process of dishonor and disrespect starts when people are dating and continues into marriage. Yet, many people act like they cannot see it. They overlook verbal or physical abuse and disregard that their visions for the future are irreconcilable in lifestyle, desire, allegiance to Christ, and finances. Sometimes people try to buy your affection with gifts or impress you in ways unreasonable for their financial situation instead of speaking and showing love in more meaningful ways. Others fail to do anything meaningful for you during courtship. These signs often warn us to avoid a particular person. Avoid anyone whose actions and communication are ungodly. They will not be a good steward of life and finances that you need.

Avoid marital pitfalls by showing love and respect at all times. Pray and thank God for your spouse every morning. Say I love you regardless of how you feel at the moment. Believers can always say in truth, I love you with the love of the LORD. Study the bible together and discuss scriptural principles when your spouse is amenable. Attend a local bible-believing church that supports godly marriages. Refuse to commit fornication and adultery. Never verbally or physically abuse them.

Work with them on a giving saving spending plan that will keep expenses well under income so an emergency fund can be established and debt can be eliminated. Refuse to do things that will devastate your finances and bring marital problems. To produce wealth that benefits your family, seek to unify on living debt-free and investing discretionary cash flow.

Give honor on special days according to your ability without abandoning good financial stewardship. It would not be honorable to God, your spouse, your children, or yourself to give them a material gift that causes you to be a poor steward. However, you always have the ability to do something that shows you appreciate them such as crafts, hand written cards, love letters, etc. Always promote a healthy relationship that fosters respect, unity, financial growth, and success. When you engage practices that please the LORD, a grateful spouse will ultimately realize the love shown and appreciate it.
