MoneyWalk 187 A Lesson From Widows

This program will help you undo financial bondage.

In the bible, a widow in Zarephath planned to fix her son a meal with the last of her flour and oil and thought they’d die of starvation thereafter because the famine and her lowly position in society was so terrible there was no way she could get any more food. Unexpectedly, Elijah, came to her town and asked for a drink of water and the first portion of their meal. He said a reward would come to her by doing so – the flour and oil would last throughout the famine and provide plenty for them to eat. Even with doubt, a promise not yet experienced, and faced with the thought of certain death from starvation days earlier than otherwise expected, she fixed him a meal. Within her heart she believed the hope Elijah had spoken more than the reality she faced. Her family was saved from death and extremely blessed as a result of her obedience to the voice of the Lord spoken by His prophet.

Similarly, a man was threatening to make a widow’s sons indentured servants as repayment for loans extended to their deceased father. The mother asked Elisha to intervene to help her family overcome the financial turmoil these debts brought upon them. He asked what resources she had. She responded only a little jar of oil. He told her to get as many pots and pans from neighbors as she could and start pouring the little jar over each one until it was full. Thus, she would be able to sell the oil, pay off family debts, and live comfortably. By faith, she acted on the word of the Lord spoken by His prophet and it brought financial freedom.

In the same way, God gives you resources (assets, belongings, gifts, and abilities) that ensure you have more than enough to make life fulfilling and successful in good times, bad times, and famine. You may not understand the value of the resource and it may seem inconsequential (ability to organize belongings, great carpentry skill, administrative or technical talent, etc.). However, with faith, the skill will be life preserving, income-generating, and profitable because the Holy Spirit through wise counsel (including some coming through men and women) will instruct you how to employ the resources for maximum effect.

Part of your plan for greater effect should be to tithe and give abundantly for the gospel to be shared with others to see them saved and discipled. Also, you should aim to eliminate personal debt, so you can create additional cashflow that allows you to give even more to services that please God’s heart. Other people may be scrimping due to over-indebtedness and catastrophe, but that will not be your lot in life. Instead, you’ll be serving others in a God honoring manner, fulfilling your purpose, reaching your destiny, and showing everyone how to prosper and humbly enjoy abundant income and assets.

The book at the link below provides principles and practical steps that help you use the Power To Get Wealth. By 1992, we had $135,000 of debt and a negative $35,000 net worth. Financial bondage and turmoil led me to seek principles and a process for employing good stewardship. As a result, we became constructively debt-free in 1998, mortgage free January 2004, millionaires in 2012, multi-millionaires shortly thereafter, and retired in 2018 in my mid-fifties from public servant jobs while giving abundantly to fund the gospel of our LORD Jesus Christ. The same power is available to you!
