MoneyWalk 233 Don’t Accept Bondage!

This program will help you undo financial bondage.

Borrowing money is not the way to have a comfortable lifestyle because debt places you in a very uncomfortable position. It causes most people to waste their wealth building ability trying to have things they want right now believing that’s what will make them happy in the long run. It causes financial bondage leaving them unable to adequately handle emergencies, living expenses during job layoffs, and other situations that require substantial assets to navigate.

Certainly, it’s not wrong to want things nor have things, as long as you don’t make this desire a priority over intimate relationship with the Lord and His will and work for your life. You will have violated this ethic when your outgo exceeds your income, and will find your upkeep will be your downfall. Likewise, when you do not have substantial assets to produce income to provide for you and family during periods of low or no income, your monthly loan payments will be your downfall.  You must learn there is a right time to experience things you desire; when the Lord provides for you in such a way that you’re able to, without debt, purchase things you desire while allowing you to maintain a healthy emergency fund and growing asset base that’ll be able to provide income for your retirement / refirement years. Thus, you’ll be able to pursue His desires for your life (meaningful vocations, ministry, and service to others) while enjoying the type of comfort that is truly desirable.

When you don’t work on being a good steward, creditors will continue to press you for payment, even when you’re in the worst financial position you’ve experienced. This bondage will not feel or be good! The bible emphatically instructs you to avoid this trap of becoming "a borrower who is slave to lenders." There is a far better option available to you. You can put yourself in the condition of a good steward instead of a borrower. A good steward has few if any debts, more than adequate monthly income with far less in expenses, and a level of assets that is many times larger than debt owed. In this position, you’ll reap the financial benefits you currently pay lenders.

Start your freedom from bondage process by cutting up credit cards, leaving only one major credit card (with a low interest rate) for drastic emergencies. Tithe and give as instructed by the bible. Make minimum payments on your debts and use all available cash flow above that to build a $1,000 first-tier emergency fund. Thereafter, use cash flow to pay off your non-mortgage account for which you owe the lowest total debt. When that is paid off, then use all disposable income to pay off the creditor for which you owe the next lowest total debt.

Trust God to provide what you need and don’t have cash to buy. Once your non-mortgage debts are paid off, increase your emergency fund to at least $10,000. Then, invest available cash flow in your 401k or 403b in the amount necessary to get your employer’s match as well as an additional amount to get your overall investment to at least 10% of your gross income. Use vehicles historically proven to bring reliable higher yields over the long term, such as no-load low-expense stock index mutual funds. Then, put your cash flow toward monthly mortgage principle, so your house can be paid off far earlier than scheduled. Once it’s paid off, put the bulk of your increased monthly cash flow toward giving to worthwhile ministries and charities, and into investments in your 401k, 403b, Roth IRA, and/or brokerage accounts that allow the market to do its long-term work of bringing you great investment growth.

By committing to this plan requiring patience, contentment, sacrifice, and self-control your debt will be eliminated in due time and you'll accumulate wealth over the course of your life. You'll remove financial bondage from your life and be the good steward the Lord desires.

The book at the link below provides principles and practical steps that help you use the Power To Get Wealth. By 1992, we had $135,000 of debt and a negative $35,000 net worth. Financial bondage and turmoil led me to seek principles and a process for employing good stewardship. As a result, we became constructively debt-free in 1998, mortgage free January 2004, millionaires in 2012, multi-millionaires shortly thereafter, and retired in 2018 in my mid-fifties from public servant jobs while giving abundantly to fund the gospel of our LORD Jesus Christ. The same power is available to you!
